Patriotic Puppy Chow
This easy red, white, and blue puppy chow (aka patriotic muddy buddies) is a delicious dessert snack that only takes a few ingredients to make.
Make and enjoy the patriotic red, white, and blue puppy chow for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day.
Red White and Blue Pretzel Cereal Mix
Candy melts and Chex are tossed in a powdered sugar coating. Mix in some white chocolate covered pretzels and red, white, and blue candies for a fun treat. Serve them at your upcoming patriotic celebrations.
What do you use to make red, white, and blue puppy chow?
Corn Chex cereal: This is our go-to cereal for any type of puppy chow or homemade chex mix.
Candy Melts: Candy melts will be what colors the cereal. For this red, white, and blue puppy chow, we use blue and red candy melts.
Powdered Sugar: A staple for puppy chow. Once you stir all the ingredients together, you shake it in a bag of powdered sugar to officially make it puppy chow.
White Chocolate Covered Pretzels: We add the pretzels for some extra fun and flavor.
Red White Blue M&Ms: These add a little extra fun and color to the puppy chow.
Red White Blue Sprinkles: These are optional but you can add them in if you want.
How to make red white and blue puppy chow:
1. Divide the powdered sugar into two gallon sized bags and set it aside.
2. Heat the red candy melts according to the package instructions. You want to make sure the candy is melted enough so that you can easily stir it.
Note: We use 2 large bowls so that the cereal gets completely coated. One bowl for the red candy and one bowl for the blue candy.
3. Mix 2 cups of the Chex cereal with the red candy melts until all the cereal pieces are completely coated. (mix gently.. some cereal pieces will break but that’s ok)
4. Transfer the coated cereal to one of the bags of powdered sugar. Seal and toss to coat.
5. Spread the coated cereal on a baking sheet to cool.
6. Repeat the process with the blue candy melts.
7. When all the Chex have cooled, combine the red and blue cereal with the pretzels, M&Ms, and star sprinkles in a large serving bowl.
How to serve this red white and blue puppy chow
You can serve the puppy chow as is on the baking sheet or put it in a large bowl and set it out.
For large gatherings, sometimes it’s easier to set the baking sheets out and let everyone dig in. Less cleanup is always nice right?
For smaller outside parties we will put the finished patriotic puppy chow in a festive serving bowl or container. One year we found a fun 4th of July bucket that we put the puppy chow in and it was a big hit.
